Walk-In Surrealist Storm by Joris Kuipers
To visit an installation by Dutch artist Joris Kuipers is to be caught up in a storm of surrealist weather.
His floating clouds dominate the gallery space in swooping swirls straight out of an expressionist painting.
The effective is evocative of expressionist works such as Van Gogh’s Starry Night.
He credits his classical art for this connection, having studied traditional art at Arnhem Academy and the Frank Mohr Institute in Groningen.
However, whilst the atmosphere traditional, his approach is entirely fresh- taking the swirls from the canvass to large components of depron foam which he then covers with acrylic paint. Thus, rather than observers of an expressionist scene, we instead enter it and inhabit its surreal take on the world.
